The winger received his marching orders in the first half of the Premier League clash

Fans have taken to social media to make their feelings clear after Anthony Gordon was sent off in the latter stages of the first half between Newcastle and Liverpool on Monday.

The Magpies’ fixture against Arne Slot’s men was shrouded in anger and frustration even before the game, with star player Alexander Isak currently on strike as he looks to force a move to Anfield.

Some protests were staged outside the stadium as news came through that Newcastle were said to have held a meeting with the want-away striker ahead of the game.

And the match started in equally chaotic fashion, as Newcastle flew out of the blocks and looked to put Liverpool under the cosh.

But for all their dominance, Eddie Howe's side struggled to carve out many significant chances or really trouble Alisson in the Liverpool net.

And then it was Ryan Gravenberch, marking his first game of the season, who delivered the hammer-blow to the Magpies, as he thrashed an effort in from distance, clipping the post on its way past Nick Pope.

With the game heading to half-time of a breathtaking encounter, Anthony Gordon sprinted towards Virgil van Dijk in possession and slid to pressurise him, but scraped his studs down the Liverpool skipper's calf.

After a VAR review, referee Simon Hooper was given no choice but to send the England international off.

Thierry Henry spoke on the incident on Sky Sports at half-time: "In our time, maybe it would have been a foul, maybe a yellow, but not a red. When it happened, I said it would be a red. But why would you put yourself in this position?

"He’s too far to reach him, he gets carried away with what’s been happening, and I can understand it."

Fellow pundit Jamie Carragher blasted the winger for the "daft" decision: "This is daft from Anthony Gordon because he had been the best okay on the pitch in that half. They will be kicking themselves because of that [the red card].

"They crossed the line, and it looks like it could’ve cost them."

And fans were not impressed with Gordon's dismissal either, which marked his third red card in his short Newcastle career.

"Very stupid boy Gordon," one fan wrote.

Another said: "Terrible from Gordon. Ruined the game."

A third added: "Gordon’s a good player but he’s always got that in him rash and definitely red."

A fourth fan wrote: "That was absolutely a red for Gordon. Totally unnecessary. Just horrific on his part."

The red card now leaves Newcastle's striker situation even more dire, with the winger being forced to play up front after Isak was unavailable once more.

William Osula, who is on the bench for tonight's game, is the only recognised senior striker who is currently available for Newcastle.

The club have recently seen bids rejected for Brentford's Yoanne Wissa and Jorgen Strand Larsen of Wolves. Either, or both, would add significant physicality and goals to Howe's side.
