The tennis star is in mourning

Andy Murray is grieving the death of his grandmother Shirley Erskine, who passed away last week, just weeks after losing his grandfather Roy.

The three-time Grand Slam champion's cousin, actor Ailsa Erskine, revealed the sad news through an Instagram post, which Murray acknowledged by liking.

Roy, a former professional footballer, died at the age of 94 last month, with his old club Stirling Albion announcing his passing.

The tennis star and his brother Jamie shared a close bond with their grandparents, making this double loss particularly devastating for the Murray family.

In her heartfelt Instagram tribute, Ailsa described her grandmother as "sweet, amazing, hilarious and one of a kind."

She wrote that Shirley "lit up every room she walked into, smiled at every stranger she passed and was always guilty of having too much chatter down Dunblane High Street."

Ailsa expressed how deeply she would miss her grandmother, adding: "There will not be a day that goes by that I won't think of her and take a little bit of her with me."

She reflected on what an extraordinary life Shirley had lived, counting herself fortunate to have been raised with "such a light of a woman" in her life.

Ailsa's tribute concluded with an emotional farewell, listing the many affectionate names she had for her grandmother: "Sleep well granny, mini, fairy b, gran gran, Shirley E, my best friend.

"Thanks for giving me the gift of the gab."

In a poignant final message, she asked Shirley to "say hi to Grandpa for me," referencing Roy's recent death.

The touching post demonstrated the profound impact Shirley had on her family, with Ailsa signing off: "Love you so much."

Both Andy and Jamie Murray were known to be deeply devoted to their grandparents, making the loss of both within such a short timeframe all the more heartbreaking.

Roy Erskine began his football career as a full-back with Hibernian in 1952, having completed his national service beforehand.

He subsequently moved to Stirling Albion two years later, before joining Cowdenbeath, where he featured in 56 of 57 matches during his time at the club.

The former defender maintained his connection with Stirling Albion throughout his life, attending Forthbank Stadium as a guest in 2023, where Murray's mother Judy photographed him with the Division Two trophy.

During that visit, a 75-year-old supporter recalled watching Roy play for the club back in 1954, testament to the lasting impression he made during his playing days.
