Viewers were not happy with the commentary for the Belgian Grand Prix

Sky Sports Formula 1 commentator David Croft has found himself defending his broadcast approach following viewer complaints about perceived favouritism towards British drivers during the Belgian Grand Prix coverage.

The criticism emerged after Australian driver Oscar Piastri secured victory at Spa-Francorchamps ahead of his McLaren colleague Lando Norris.

Social media users expressed frustration that the commentary team appeared to concentrate excessively on Norris throughout the race broadcast.

The complaints highlighted concerns about the international feed's focus, given that Sky's coverage reaches audiences worldwide.

The 55-year-old broadcaster took to X to address the criticism directly after a user complained about the commentary's persistent focus on British competitors.

The viewer, posted: "So any chance the commentary can be a little bit more diverse other than constantly focusing on British drivers. Sky provides a worldwide feed, and a little less of Lando Lando Lando would be nice for a change."

The controversy centres on the closing stages of the race, where the battle between the McLaren drivers dominated the narrative.

Croft mounted a robust defence of his commentary choices. He questioned what alternative narrative the critics would have preferred, given that the primary storyline involved whether Piastri could maintain his advantage on a single-stop strategy using medium tyres, whilst Norris attempted to close the gap on hard compounds.

In his response, Croft asked directly: "So what would you have preferred me to talk about yesterday?"

He emphasised that neither he nor co-commentator Martin Brundle had shown preference for a Norris victory and had offered extensive praise for Piastri's performance.

The discussion intensified when critics suggested Croft should "go back and listen" to his own commentary. However, several social media users rallied to support the broadcaster, with one fan replied telling him: "You do a great job."

The exchange concluded amicably, with Croft acknowledging: "I always try and deliver the best commentary, trust me, but we can always learn in life, which is why I asked for your thoughts. Thanks for taking the time to reply."

The Belgian Grand Prix result has shifted the championship dynamics, with Piastri now holding a 16-point advantage over Norris in the drivers' standings. McLaren's strong performance continues their impressive 2025 campaign.
