The English racer received a 10-second penalty for the incident

The Mexico Grand Prix began in chaotic fashion, as Charles Leclerc, Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton all left the track during the opening period.

Hamilton, who was third on pole, went wheel-to-wheel with Verstappen in an early battle that led to the English racer's brakes locking and forcing him to use the escape road.

He then rejoined in third place in turn five.

Both turns one, that saw Verstappen exit the track, and four were investigated, with Hamilton being handed a 10-second mandatory penalty for using the escape road. The decision was announced on lap 15, with Hamilton pitting for the penalty nine laps later.

The seven-time champion was left fuming, blasting the decision as "such s***" when discussing on the radio with his team.

"We have a 10-second time penalty for the incident at Turn Four with Verstappen. We don't agree," Ricardo Adami said to Hamilton.

"That's such s*** man," Hamilton replied. "The grip is so small there, the grip is so low there."

It marks another major blow for Hamilton who seemingly can't catch a break at Ferrari.

And fans immediately took to social media to express their frustrations with the decision.

One fan wrote: "David Croft had no issues when Charles Leclerc and Max Verstappen went off track to gain a position, but when Lewis Hamilton does it, suddenly it’s a problem. Says everything you need to know about the so called 'British bias'."

Another added: "Charles cuts the corner and gains an advantage no investigation… Verstappen hits Hamilton no investigation… Hamilton does something - immediate investigation. OK LOL."

A third questioned: "And what about a few corners prior when max did it??? Or at the start of the race???"

While a fourth simply said: "That Hamilton penalty is insane."

Hamilton pitted shortly after the decision, and returned to the track in 14th - he was third prior to the penalty.

So far, the race has seen Lando Norris storm ahead as he looks to close the gap on McLaren team-mate Oscar Piastri.

The Australian, who is set to fall to second behind Norris in the Drivers' Championship as it stands, was as low as 11th, but finds himself chasing George Russell in the top five.
