The Briton suffered brake failure in the closing laps of the Singapore Grand Prix

Lewis Hamilton has called for his Ferrari team to “go further” in the pursuit of victory after the team had a difficult Singapore Grand Prix.

Hamilton had looked on for a top-five finish as he tried to close the gap to Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli, but with only a few laps to go in the race, his front left brake failed and after charging his way through the field, he had to cruise to the finish, ending up ninth after a post-race penalty.

As he struggled with his brakes, he was forced to cut corners, something the stewards gave him a penalty for after the race, which dropped him behind Fernando Alonso, who had been closing him down on track.

After the race, the 40-year-old took to social media to say: “After a tough week, it feels good to be home. I had some time to reflect on my journey from Singapore and the main emotion I’m feeling is gratitude.

“The support and love I have felt since losing Roscoe has been a powerful reminder that, even when things sometimes seem dark, there is so much good in the world. You just have to look for it.

“I'm looking at the positives on track too. The media headlines only tell one story: one where we don't get things quite right, or things don't go our way.

“Yesterday was the perfect example. We got the strategy right, but the brake issue set us back just when momentum was building. So now we get back in the factory, learn from this last race, and plan for the next one.

“I'm really proud of this team and want to help deliver the results they and the Tifosi deserve. I see the progress we are making, and the hard work that goes into every race, but this is Ferrari.

“Progress alone is not enough. To achieve greatness we need to go further, be better. There is so much we can achieve together, and if we can build on our successes, and change the things we need to, I fully believe we will get there.”

Hamilton has been struggling in his first season with Ferrari, and many fans had hoped the Briton would be able to win an eighth title, but both he and Charles Leclerc have struggled to get to grips with the SF-25.

After the race, the veteran Ferrari driver said: “We did a good step forward, but we did the same step as Red Bull and Mercedes.

“McLaren has been kind of dominating since the beginning of the season. On that side, it's a little bit disappointing. But on my side, I'm happy. I'm very happy with the way I perform – I just wish we were fighting for victories.”

Ferrari will hope they can win a race this season, but with the season coming to a close, they will be hoping they can turn their performance around as the teams head to the Circuit of the Americas for the US Grand Prix next weekend.
