David Coulthard has been left confused by Hamilton’s decision to leave Mercedes

David Coulthard has revealed he was “totally confused” by Lewis Hamilton’s decision to leave Mercedes and join Ferrari.

The move was announced before the start of the 2024 season, Hamilton confirmed he would be leaving the Silver Arrows before the season and went on to win the British Grand Prix with them on his farewell tour.

His time in red hasn’t been so fruitful, failing to live up to expectations and he seems to be struggling to adapt to the SF-25.

The seven-time champion has been slower than team-mate Charles Leclerc throughout the season, and despite taking a sprint pole and win in China, he has yet to take a grand prix podium for the team.

Hamilton leaving Mercedes came as a shock to the F1 world as everyone expected him to end his career with the Silver Arrows.

Coulthard compared the Briton’s move to Ferrari to Michael Schumacher’s return to F1 with Mercedes, due to both drivers ending long relationships to try new teams.

"I always felt that Lewis had developed a special bond and loyalty with Mercedes," Coulthard told BILD.

"Therefore, I was totally confused when I heard about his switch.

"It was a bit like Michael Schumacher's Formula 1 comeback at Mercedes after he had built up something so great with Ferrari."

Coulthard added: "At the end of the day, it's Lewis' path, his story, his book that he writes. Maybe he'll win a Grand Prix, maybe he'll win a championship - but maybe he won't."

Ahead of the Canadian Grand Prix, Hamilton only sits sixth in the driver's championship and 23 points behind his Ferrari teammate.

He is 115 points behind championship leader Oscar Piastri.

With the deficit so large Coulthard is not expecting to see a record-breaking eighth title for Hamilton this season.

"No, it doesn’t look like it," said the Scotsman.

Hamilton will be looking for a positive weekend in Canada, it’s a track he goes well around.

He has won around the circuit seven times and was gifted a race-used helmet by his hero Ayrton Senna before the race in 2019.
