The Briton has been axed by the Formula One side

Christian Horner is currently in the spotlight after Red Bull decided to axe the 51-year-old, just days after the British Grand Prix.

The Briton had been the longest-serving team principal in the sport but has now departed, with Laurent Mekies installed as his replacement.

Red Bull have released a statement following the decision. They said: "We would like to thank Christian Horner for his exceptional work over the last 20 years.

"With his tireless commitment, experience, expertise and innovative thinking, he has been instrumental in establishing Red Bull Racing as one of the most successful and attractive teams in Formula 1.

"Thank you for everything, Christian, and you will forever remain an important part of our team history."

Horner's departure comes 17 months after a sexting scandal that sent shockwaves around the Formula One world.

The Briton was accused of sending inappropriate messages to a female employee, with Horner always denying the allegations.

He was twice cleared internally by Red Bull, with the Briton always adamant that he'd be able to clear his name.

Horner was supported by wife Geri Halliwell throughout the ordeal and, after being cleared of any wrongdoing for a second time in August, said: "Obviously, it's been a hugely thorough process and, of course, I was relieved with the appeal concluding and dismissing the claim."

His accuser was suspended by Red Bull and placed on full pay.

When asked whether he regretted how the saga had unfolded publicly, Horner added: "It is a private matter.

"I'm just relieved that the process [carried out by] the company now has been concluded. Our focus is very much on track."

Horner oversaw great success during his time in charge of Red Bull.

Sebastian Vettel won four titles under his guidance, with Max Verstappen winning four himself.

The team also won six constructors' championships during that time.

Horner's relationship with Verstappen, however, is believed to have deteriorated over the past 18 months or so.

LATEST SPORTS NEWS:

Verstappen, who has been strongly linked with a move away from Red Bull amid links to Mercedes, currently sits third in the standings having won just two races so far.

His father, Jos, previously called for Horner to be sacked last year - only for the 51-year-old to remain in place.

Horner also had to contend with the departure of key Red Bull designer Adrian Newey, who departed to Audi.

Verstappen recently suggested he would be staying put, however. Speaking over the weekend, the 27-year-old said: "I’m still fully committed to the team."

Responding to the links to Mercedes, he added: "I can’t do anything about all the stories that are written up.

"I also don’t pay attention to it. It has never crossed my mind to take a year out.

"Driving anywhere else or with anyone else is not even on my mind. This scenario does not exist in my head."
