Michael van Gerwen has made his competitive return to darts at a Modus event in Waregem, Belgium on Saturday, marking his first appearance since confirming his separation from wife Daphne Govers in May.
The three-time world champion had withdrawn from the Dutch Darts Championship when announcing the divorce and has not competed on the PDC Tour since. The 36-year-old Dutchman shared footage of his entrance on X, writing: "What a phenomenal atmosphere this evening."
The entertainment company Modus has gained recognition for hosting events across the UK and Europe, featuring professional players and encouraging audience participation. Van Gerwen's appearance represents a significant step in his potential return to regular competition.
Van Gerwen notably departed from his signature look, wearing a black shirt rather than the bright green that has defined his stage presence. This marked only the second time in 15 years he has changed his usual attire.

He previously wore green at Modus exhibition events, with his only other deviation being a special black and gold edition at January's Winmau World Masters to commemorate five years with the sponsors.
Despite the change in appearance, the Belgian crowd delivered an enthusiastic welcome. The warm reception appeared to signal strong support for the Dutch star as he takes initial steps back into competitive darts following his personal difficulties.

Van Gerwen and Daphne married in 2014 and share two children. Following their separation announcement, he stated he would withdraw from all PDC events for an indefinite period.
His absence has seen him miss significant tournaments, including a European Tour event in Rosmalen and the World Cup of Darts in Germany. Danny Noppert and Gian van Veen stepped in to represent the Netherlands at the World Cup, advancing to the quarter-finals.
