The 17-year-old was unable to make it a Premier League hat-trick on Thursday night

Luke Littler has taken to social media to admit he's 'disappointed' by his Premier League defeat to Michael van Gerwen on Thursday.

But fans have flooded the 17-year-old with positive messages after he came close to a hat-trick.

Littler had gone into Thursday night's event in Birmingham looking for a third win in a row after recent triumphs in Belfast and Manchester.

The teenager continued his impressive form, beating Rob Cross and Luke Humphries to reach the final.

Yet Littler was unable to beat Van Gerwen, with the Dutchman throwing his way to a 6-3 victory.

Now, writing on Instagram, the Briton has admitted he was 'disappointed' at missing out on a hat-trick.

However, the youngster was still upbeat ahead of Night 12 in Rotterdam next week.

"Disappointed to not get win #3 after making the final but more points and still top," he said.

"We go after it again next week in Rotterdam."

Before his final showdown with Van Gerwen, Littler took time to mock Liverpool following their 3-0 Europa League defeat to Atalanta.

Littler, a Manchester United fan, shared a picture of the result and said: "Oh dear!"

Liverpool had gone into their showdown with Atalanta confident of securing victory, especially given the match was at Anfield.

However, a brace from West Ham flop Gianluca Scamacca - and another goal from Mario Pasalic - consigned the Reds to defeat.

While Littler was disappointed by his failure to win Night 11 in Birmingham, the 17-year-old has been flooded with positive messages from fans in the time since.

"Least liverpool lost," said one user.

"Slightly off in the final, but you’re smashing it mate," said another user.

"Well done Luke, good effort and what a match with Luke Humphries," stated a third.

A fourth said: "You did brilliantly man, hoping you get it in Rotterdam!"

And a fifth praised Littler by saying: "You did amazing Luke head up for next week."

Van Gerwen, meanwhile, has admitted he doesn't like playing in the Netherlands ahead of Night 12 in Rotterdam next week.

He surprisingly confessed: "Yeah, I'm not really a fan of the Netherlands to be fair.

"I like the crowd and everything but it does my head in!

"All the interviews beforehand and everything. Ah, who cares."

When quizzed on his victory, he added: "It's about time, eh!?
