Noa-Lynn van Leuven has made darts history by becoming the first transgender player to win titles while playing against both men and women in the same week.

The 27-year-old last week won the Challenger Tour title against men, defeating a string of male PDC event winners to earn £2,500.

Van Leuven then played in a women's event in Wigan on Saturday.

And she was able to dispatch both Fallon Sherrock and world No 1 Beau Greaves on her way to winning the PDC Women's Series event.

Sherrock had won the first event earlier in the day, beating Van Leuven on her way to victory.

However, the trans star won their semi-final clash in the second event on the day.

Van Leuven then proceeded to beat Ireland's Katie Sheldon in the final.

However, tennis icon Martina Navratilova has since questioned darts organisers for letting the Dutch star compete.

She said on social media that all sports 'even in darts' should only allow biological females to take part.

The PDC, at present, follows the guidelines set out by the Darts Regular Authority.

Following guidance from the International Olympic Committee, trans players are able to play due to 'no presumption of advantage' and 'inclusion'.

They have also advised sports to individually consider 'disproportionate advantage, which needs therefore to be mitigated'.

Earlier this week, a group of 26 academics challenged the policy.

They said that 'inclusion of transgender women in female sports categories cannot be reconciled with fairness'.

Van Leuven spoke to the Guardian last year and said she had started transitioning at the age of 16.

“I was getting more and more unhappy with myself, to a point that I didn’t want to live any more,” she said.

“And that was the moment where I thought: I can go two sides now. I can end it, or I can live as who I want to live.”

Darts star Deta Hedman, however, recently said that she was opposed to the idea.

“I have thought this is wrong since day one," she fumed in December.

"For many months I’ve struggled with transgenders playing in the women’s world ranked events.”

PDC chief executive Matt Porter also defended Van Leuven playing last year, insisting she 'more than complies' with the sport's transgender policy.
