Jackpot is set to make a return to the sport after two years away

Adrian Lewis is returning to the oche at the end of August, and he has set his sights on staging a remarkable comeback.

While the two-time world champion has gone on record to state his priority is to "enjoy it", the desire to win and compete deep down has not left him.

After a two-year hiatus, the 40-year-old is back and he revealed to GB News that he has been practising heavily in his time off.

"I’ve been practising, well, at least three hours a day at the moment, so I am on it," he said.

There is one problem, though, and one major alteration he is considering making upon his long-awaited return to the oche: "The issue I’ve got at the minute is my sponsor sent me a couple of sets of darts in different lengths, but I’m throwing well with both!

"I'm just in the process of nailing down which ones I'm going to use. They are similar to what I used in terms of the pencil shape, but they are two different lengths.

"One’s a lot shorter than the other barrel, so I'm just tinkering at the minute."

The length of the darting point can be a significant change to a dart player's throw. Luke Littler is well-known for his unusually long points, often appearing as if they could fall off the board.

The positive is that grouping can be made much easier. Littler's not bad in that department. Neither was Lewis.

During his time away from the oche, Littler and Luke Humphries have become the trailblazers in a new generation of the sport. The world No1 went on record to say his "favourite" player was Jackpot and that he dreamed of facing his childhood idol in a final. Could this dream be a reality?

"Who knows what the future’s going to bring?" Lewis replied, somewhat diplomatically. "I've been in a lot of exhibitions with the top 10 in the world, week in, week out, and I'm beating them all the time. So it isn’t like my game's not there.

"At the minute, it's the two Lukes obviously dominating everything and they've been fantastic. They're both a credit to the sport and a credit to themselves. If I can get a rivalry going with one of them two in the future, who knows?"

But Lewis has something in his sights much before then: his first televised event.

He will be competing in the MODUS Super Series International Pairs from August 25 to 30, alongside Steve Beaton, who recently discussed a potential return to professional darts on GB News. The event will be live on Pluto TV.

Canada’s Jeff Smith and the returning Dawson Murschell, South African trailblazer Devon Petersen, German crowd-favourite Rene Eidams, and Swedish star Andreas Harrysson also return, whereas 16-time World Champion Phil Taylor will be part of the presentation team on Finals Night.

Despite the all-star lineup, Lewis instilled confidence in his and Beaton's chances: "The experience that Steve's got alone, never mind myself. I think that’ll put us in good stead. And you know, I'm really looking forward to it. We've got a great chance."

But The Bronzed Adonis is not the only reunion for Lewis at the MODUS Super Series at the end of the month, with Taylor in attendance.

The Power and Jackpot go way back. Their history and relationship are unlike any other within the sport - it's had its twists and turns, ups and downs. The pair even won four World Cup titles together, but it hasn't always been plain sailing.

With Taylor likely attending Lewis' return on commentary duty, will he be thinking of the pair's relationship at all, knowing his darting professor is eagle-eyed watching above him? Lewis saw the funny side.

"He’ll probably be commentating on our game, I should have thought. I can just remember him telling me off all the time when we were playing in the PDC last, so that'll be running through my mind I think!"

While Jackpot has set his sights on a potential rivalry with two of the world's best, he insists his major goals are short-term for now: to enjoy it.

"The priority has just got to be, first off and enjoy it. Obviously, I'm playing pairs with Stevie Beaton," Lewis explained.

"That's totally different than playing singles, you’re playing for yourself. So it's going to be quite tough until it's all settled down a bit, but I am really looking forward to it."

But are there any tangible, longer-term goals? Perhaps a tournament you could set your sights on as a hope to return to the big stage and make the dreams of a rivalry against Littler or Humphries a reality.

"If I decide to go to Q school in January, there's no reason I couldn't make the World Championships the following year [2026].

"I'll just focus on having a good year, really. Keep practising hard to keep dedicated, and just see where it takes me."

His ambitions are high, but for now, the foreground in his mind is clear: return to the oche, enjoy the moment and accelerate his darting career back into gear from there. Will it be in first gear or sixth? Who knows, but people are sure to watch it.

The return comes live on Pluto TV, between August 25 and 30.
