EXCLUSIVE: The Three Lions icon has opened up ahead of Friday's first Test match Down Under

Cricket legend Matthew Hoggard says England must believe they can win the Ashes and said: “The time for talking is over”.

In an exclusive GB News interview, Hoggard - who helped guide England to victory back in 2005 - also said Australia’s injury woes would be a boost ahead of this week’s opening test.

Reflecting on what it’s like to be part of an Ashes series, he said: “There’s nothing quite like it. When you’re over in Australia, it’s different from any other series.

"The whole country feels against you, and every ball is a battle.

"Walking into a café or a pub, you feel that pressure. It’s intense, but that’s what makes it so special.

"It’s not just about the game - It’s about pride, about representing your country in the biggest contest of all.”

He went on to describe the Australian atmosphere.

“They give you a lot of stick, and you’re always aware of the crowd, the noise," he continued.

"But that’s what pushes you. It makes you want to perform even more. When you finally get a wicket or score runs, it’s a feeling like no other. It’s why we play the game.”

Looking ahead, Hoggard, who is now a sought-after expert and commentator with the London Keynote Speakers Agency said: “We’ve got a good team this time.

“We haven’t won in Australia since 2011, but we’ve got the firepower.

"The Perth pitch looks like it’ll be a fast, green surface. That suits us - our bowlers are ready, and our batsmen are prepared to go hard.

"It’s going to be tough, no doubt, but I believe we can do it.”

He emphasised the importance of keeping the pressure on Australia.

“It’s about taking one more wicket, making one more score," he said.

"The one thing about this squad is that we’re not here just to make up the numbers. We want to win.

"We’ve got the talent, and we’ve got the motivation. So we’ll see what happens. I think we have a real shot this time.”

Touching on Bazball, he said, “It’s been great to see. It’s a real burst of energy into England cricket.

"It’s about playing fearless, attacking cricket. That’s what people want to see, entertainment and performance.

"When you’re over in Australia, though, it’s about that extra bit of mental toughness, staying calm against the crowd and the hostile environment. That’s where the real test lies.”

The conversation turned to the mental side of the game. “There’s a lot of sledging and mind games, but these days, the microphones in the stumps mean players have to be even more careful," he added.

"You need thick skin, but also control. That’s what makes the Ashes special. It’s intense, it’s passionate, and it’s the best showdown in cricket.”

Hoggard finished with a simple, confident message.

“The talk’s over. Now it’s time for cricket. I’m excited to see how it all unfolds," he concluded.

"We’ve got a solid chance. It’s going to be a cracking series. Can’t wait to see it all start.”
