English cricket has been plunged into turmoil after it emerged that a prominent figure in the sport, believed to be in his forties, is under police investigation over allegations of spiking and sexual assault.

According to The Daily Telegraph, the alleged incident occurred on May 22 in London’s SW6 area — which covers Fulham and Parsons Green — and the man was interviewed under caution by the Metropolitan Police on June 5.

He has not been arrested, and inquiries remain ongoing.

In a statement, the Met said: “Two women are believed to have been spiked, with one also allegedly sexually assaulted.

"A man in his 40s was interviewed under caution on Thursday, June 5. Enquiries remain ongoing and no arrests have been made at this stage.”

The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) confirmed it is aware of the allegations but has so far declined to comment while the investigation continues.

This latest revelation comes against the backdrop of a series of misconduct cases that have rocked the domestic game.

In August, a county coach — whose identity was withheld by the Cricket Discipline Panel — was banned for nine months for inappropriate behaviour toward two members of staff across 2023 and 2024.

A statement from the CDC detailed the nature of the misconduct, saying: “He engaged in inappropriate and sexualised messaging, including sending images of his erect penis, to more junior female members of staff at a county cricket club.

"On one occasion he attempted to kiss one of the more junior members of staff.”

Just nine months earlier, in November 2023, another professional coach — also unnamed — received a six-month suspension for what was described as “inappropriate sexual behaviour.”

Chris Haward, managing director of the Cricket Regulator, has reiterated that tackling sexual misconduct within cricket is a top priority.

“Removing sexual misconduct from the game is a priority for the Cricket Regulator,” he said following the previous disciplinary cases.

Cricket has already faced major cultural challenges in recent years following the Yorkshire racism scandal and subsequent revelations about dressing room culture across the county circuit. The ECB is expected to issue further guidance to clubs and counties once the Metropolitan Police conclude their inquiry.
