Supporters of the Three Lions have taken to social media

England cricket fans have called for King Charles to bestow a knighthood on Ben Stokes following the 34-year-old's sensational exploits against Australia on Friday morning.

The Three Lions found themselves up against it after being bowled out for 172, despite Harry Brooks' impressive half-century.

But Stokes blitzed England back into contention, with the all-rounder clinching five wickets with a brilliant display in hot conditions in Perth.

The Three Lions captain has often produced clutch moments over the years and Friday's showing, without a doubt, ranks up there with the best.

There is, of course, plenty of work to do if England are to secure a first series triumph Down Under since the days of Andrew Strauss' stewardship.

But many supporters have taken to social media to call for King Charles to give Stokes a knighthood already, after just one day of the latest showdown between the two nations.

"Just give Stokes the knighthood already ffs," were the words of one user. A second added: "Get Ben Stokes that knighthood."

Their words were echoed by a third supporter, who even included the Royal Family's official X account in their message. They said: "When does Ben Stokes get his knighthood then? @RoyalFamily."

A fourth opined: "Knighthood is in the post Sir Ben Stokes #TheAshes."

And a fifth said: "Oi @RoyalFamily give Ben Stokes a knighthood immediately."

While Stokes hasn't been knighted, the England cricket star did receive an OBE after being included in the late Queen's New Year's Honours list in 2020.

He secured the award after playing a key role in the Three Lions' sensational Cricket World Cup triumph that year.

Stokes hit a remarkable 84 not out in the final of the tournament, with England beating New Zealand via boundary count in one of the most dramatic matches the country has ever seen.

Meanwhile, England bowler Brydon Carse has lavished praise on Stokes and his decision-making following the first day in Perth.

Speaking to the BBC, he said: “Ben Stokes kept it very simple. We had 50 minutes before tea and I thought the way Jofra [Archer] and Gus [Atkinson] started was exactly what we spoke about as a group.

"We continued it as a group of five seamers throughout that last session. Stokesy said let’s smash the wicket hard and let’s get as much as we can out of the wicket.

“The group of six or seven seamers in the squad, we all complement each other, we all have different skills and attributes and I think that stands us in good stead.

“It’s put us in a good position after the way our first innings went. I don’t think much will change throughout the game. We’ll rotate our five seamers, try and get as much as we can out of the wicket.”

When quizzed further on Stokes, he added: "[He's] unbelievable.

"The way he’s trained over the last three or four months to get to this position to be fit and firing.

"Today he reaped his reward. His character and resilience is something this team looks up to.”

Whether the drama continues on Saturday remains to be seen.
