England secured a thrilling 2-1 series lead over India after Shoaib Bashir claimed the final wicket in extraordinary circumstances to end five days of captivating Test cricket.

The young spinner delivered the decisive blow when Mohammed Siraj defended solidly into the ground, only for the ball to trickle around his legs and onto the stumps.

The dramatic conclusion came with India fighting valiantly to save the match, having been reduced to 82 for seven earlier in their innings.

Ben Stokes' side prevailed in what proved to be an enthralling contest that went down to the wire, with Bashir's breakthrough sparking jubilant celebrations.

The dismissal left Siraj devastated as he defended with a full blade, but the ball bounced and spun back, striking leg stump and dislodging the bail.

Sky Sports Cricket's Michael Atherton exclaimed: "Can you believe it?! What a way for this Test to end! India's resistance is finally broken and England have their moment of victory.

"Heartbreak for Siraj, and elation for England."

"He was running out of partners but still having the mental resilience to keep going over after over, not making an error.

"He has batted brilliantly, the attitude of Bumrah and Siraj is one to learn for all of India cricket really. They did not want to give up, they wanted to make a match out of it.

"They just kept pushing, prodding, and doing everything to stay in the game."

Ravindra Jadeja remained unbeaten on 61 from 181 deliveries, mounting an extraordinary rearguard action that nearly saved the match for India.

The all-rounder demonstrated remarkable resilience, grinding out runs through singles and showing tremendous guts when his team appeared destined for defeat at 82 for seven.

His partnership with the tail-enders showcased India's fighting spirit as they refused to surrender despite the dire situation.

Despite the fierce competition over five days, both teams came together in a display of sportsmanship as England players embraced Siraj following his dismissal.
