The England captain has been forced to retire

England's Test captain has been forced to withdraw from the decisive fifth match against India at the Kia Oval following a severe shoulder injury. Medical assessments have confirmed Ben Stokes suffered a grade three muscle tear in his right shoulder, necessitating an extended recovery period.

The injury emerged during the previous week's drawn encounter at Old Trafford and has progressively worsened. With England's next Test commitments not scheduled until the winter Ashes tour, the 34-year-old faces a race against time to regain fitness.

The all-rounder's absence marks a significant blow as England prepare for Thursday's series finale, with first ball scheduled for 11am.

England have implemented wholesale changes to their squad, with vice-captain Ollie Pope assuming leadership duties for the crucial encounter. The hosts have made four alterations to their line-up from the Old Trafford Test.

Warwickshire's Jacob Bethell will make his Test debut, slotting into the middle order at number six. The youngster joins a revamped side that sees pace bowlers Gus Atkinson, Jamie Overton and Josh Tongue forming a new seam attack.

Spinner Liam Dawson has been omitted alongside fast bowlers Jofra Archer and Brydon Carse. Joe Root and Bethell will share spin bowling responsibilities in the absence of a specialist slow bowler.

Speaking at a press conference on Tuesday, Stokes expressed his disappointment at the enforced withdrawal.

"I am obviously disappointed," he stated. "I have got a decent tear in one of the muscles I can't pronounce."

The England skipper revealed he travelled to the venue on Tuesday morning hoping to participate solely as a batsman.

Following extensive consultations with medical staff and head coach Brendon McCullum, plus personal reflection, the decision was made to prioritise long-term recovery.

"It is one of those of weighing up the risk and reward and the risk was way too high for the damage," Stokes explained.

"I wouldn't expect to put any of my players at risk with an injury like this."

Stokes confirmed he will commence rehabilitation immediately, focusing on preparations for England's winter programme.

"Once the series was done, I was feet up anyway, so it doesn't make too much difference from what I had at the end of the series until the winter anyway," he remarked.
