Trans athlete AB Hernandez capped a controversial high school athletics career by winning two state titles on a dramatic day that saw protests, political rallies and police presence outside the California track and field championships.
Hernandez claimed gold medals in the girls' high jump and triple jump at the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) state finals on Saturday, while also finishing third in the long jump.
The victories came amid heightened tensions surrounding transgender participation in girls' sport, with campaigners from opposing sides gathering outside the championship venue.
Police officers were called to monitor a confrontation between LGBTQ activists and supporters of the "Save Girls Sports" movement after a heated exchange developed during a press conference held near the event.
The press conference was organised by advocacy groups Pride at the Pier and Rainbow Families Action, with Hernandez's mother, Nereyda Hernandez, among those speaking in support of transgender athletes.
Later, a group of campaigners advocating for restrictions on transgender participation in female sport arrived at the location, resulting in a tense verbal stand-off.
Clovis Police Department officers remained on site until tensions eased, with no arrests reported and no intervention ultimately required.

The controversy surrounding Hernandez has dominated discussion throughout the California athletics season and intensified further during championship weekend.
On Friday, Hernandez appeared in a campaign video with Democratic California gubernatorial candidate Tom Steyer ahead of the preliminary rounds.
Republican gubernatorial candidate Steve Hilton later attended a separate rally outside the venue, using the issue of transgender athletes in girls' sports as a central campaign message.

Attention remained firmly fixed on the championships as competition got underway.
Hernandez successfully defended state titles in the high jump and triple jump, repeating achievements from the previous year.
A third-place finish in the long jump completed another successful outing at the state's premier schools athletics event.
The CIF once again implemented a policy designed to recognise athletes finishing directly behind Hernandez in each event.
As a result, female competitors shared podium places alongside Hernandez during medal ceremonies.
Photographs of the podium arrangements circulated widely on social media during the championships and generated fresh debate over the governing body's approach.

The issue has become increasingly prominent beyond the athletics track.
The US Department of Justice is pursuing legal action against California education agencies regarding policies that permit transgender athletes to compete in girls' sports.
Jurupa Unified School District, where Hernandez attends school, is also facing a federal investigation linked to the same issue.
While Hernandez's high school sporting career is now complete, the wider debate shows little sign of disappearing.
