Zara and Mike Tindall brought royal support to Twickenham on Saturday as England’s Red Roses lifted the Women’s Rugby World Cup, while Princess Kate, the team’s patron, stayed away but sent a personal message of encouragement.

Mike shared a photograph of himself and Zara beaming in the stadium stands after the win.

He wrote on Instagram: “What a day!! Massive congrats to @redrosesrugby what a win. Amazing atmosphere, thanks to @howdeninsurance for having us!

“There will be some sore heads in the morning! #womensrwc2025 #champions #englandrugby”.

Earlier in the day, Kensington Palace released a note from the Princess of Wales, which read: “Good luck England!

“Wishing the very best of luck to the Red Roses in their Women’s Rugby World Cup Final at Twickenham today. We’re so proud of you! C”.

The message was accompanied by a previously unseen photograph of the Princess smiling with Red Roses players in the Brighton changing room during the group stage earlier this month.

In the picture, she wore a red cowboy-style hat decorated with an England rose, while the squad sported matching white rose hats.

Princess Kate has been a committed supporter of the women’s game since becoming patron of the Rugby Football Union in 2022, frequently attending matches and shining a spotlight on women’s sport.

Her decision to remain behind the scenes this weekend, while still sending a personal message, reflects her reduced public schedule as she is in remission following cancer treatment.

The Tindalls’ prominent presence at Twickenham underlined the Royal Family’s backing for women’s rugby.

Zara, an accomplished equestrian and Olympic silver medallist, and Mike, a former England rugby international, are regulars at high-profile sporting events and have often represented the family when other senior royals are unable to attend.

Saturday’s win marked a triumphant conclusion to the tournament and a significant moment for English rugby.

Princess Kate’s words of encouragement and the Tindalls’ visible support highlighted the Royal Family’s pride in the Red Roses’ achievement and their ongoing commitment to women’s sport.
