The whereabouts of the former duchess is currently unknown

US lawmakers have called on Sarah Ferguson to testify under oath to the House Oversight Committee about her links with convicted paedophile Jeffrey Epstein.

US officials have repeatedly called on Ms Ferguson’s ex-husband, Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, but have not received any response.

Congressman Suhas Subramanyam, a member of the HOC investigating Epstein’s prosecution, said the former duchess had “information related to the investigation.

“Sarah Ferguson should give sworn testimony to our committee," he added.

While there is no legal way to get Ms Ferguson to testify in the US, Mr Subramayam has told the BBC that lawmakers would be “happy to work out terms that work for her,” so long as she testifies under oath to the committee.

His calls aligned with Democratic Congresswoman Melanie Stansbury, who has continually urged anyone with information relating to the paedophile financier to reveal what they know to ensure justice for survivors.

She said: “If Ferguson or any member of their family has such information, our responsibility is to follow the facts wherever they lead.”

The family of Virginia Giuffre has also said they “strongly believe” that the Ms Ferguson should go to the US to answer questions.

“If Ferguson knows anything, she should testify in the United States immediately,” they said.

The calls for her to testify have intensified after the release of the Epstein files earlier this year, in which she appears to feature prominently.

Gloria Allred, a lawyer representing some of Epstein’s victims, has said the files make it clear that Ms Ferguson is “not the victim in this story.”

“While many individuals who are named in the Epstein files are able to claim that they had no knowledge of Epstein's crimes against children when they associated with him, that is not a defence that Sarah Ferguson is able to assert.”

However, media lawyer Jonathan Coad, who has represented the former duchess in defamation and privacy cases in the past, has said there is “no chance” that she will go to the US.

“Of course she won't, and if she were still my client, my very strong advice to her would be not to go," he said.

“It would be a disaster for her, for her daughters Beatrice and Eugenie – and also for Andrew, as it would show him up for not going.”

Being named or pictured in the Epstein files does not show any sign of wrongdoing or misconduct.

Ms Ferguson has stated in the past her regret with being associated with Epstein, saying: "I would never have anything to do with Jeffrey Epstein ever again. I abhor paedophilia and any sexual abuse of children. It was a gigantic error of judgment."
