The funeral reflected Katharine’s deep Catholic faith

Sarah Ferguson has made her first social media post after reuniting with her ex-husband, Prince Andrew, for the funeral of Katharine, Duchess of Kent — a significant royal event that brought together senior members of the family.

On Tuesday, September 16, the Duke and Duchess of York attended the solemn Catholic Requiem Mass at Westminster Cathedral, which honoured the life of the Duchess of Kent, who died on September 4 aged 92.

The service reflected Katharine’s deep Catholic faith, which she embraced after converting to Roman Catholicism in 1994, and celebrated her decades of charitable work in education and music.

Prince Andrew and Sarah, who divorced in 1996 but remain close and live together at Royal Lodge in Windsor, arrived together under police escort.

Their joint appearance was closely watched, marking the disgraced Duke’s first major public outing in months.

The couple share two daughters, Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie, and frequently appear together at family occasions despite no longer being married.

Following the funeral, Sarah — affectionately known as Fergie — paid tribute to the late Duchess of Kent on Instagram.

Sharing a striking image of Katharine’s coffin being carried from the cathedral, she wrote: “Remembering HRH The Duchess of Kent.”

The Duchess of Kent was the wife of Prince Edward, Duke of Kent, a first cousin of the late Queen Elizabeth II.

She became one of the most senior members of the Royal Family to convert to Catholicism and was known for her quiet devotion to charitable causes and for stepping back from public royal duties many years ago.

After the Westminster service, her coffin was taken by hearse to the Royal Burial Ground at Frogmore in Windsor for a private interment.

Prince Andrew’s appearance came at a turbulent time. The 64-year-old Duke stepped back from public duties in 2019 following scrutiny of his friendship with the late financier and convicted paedophile Jeffrey Epstein.

Despite the controversy surrounding the Duke of York, the funeral brought together a wide circle of royals, including King Charles, Princess Kate, Prince William, Princess Anne and the Duchess of Edinburgh, reflecting the family’s focus on mourning Katharine’s long life and service.

Fergie’s simple tribute and her quiet presence alongside Prince Andrew underscored the couple’s enduring family bond and their shared respect for the late Duchess of Kent on a day of remembrance.
