Andrew will remain a prince as he is the son of the late Queen Elizabeth II

Sir Keir Starmer is facing growing calls to pass a law which will allow Parliament to strip Prince Andrew of his dukedom.

Prince Andrew announced on Friday that he was giving up his Duke of York title, his knighthood and his role as a Royal Knight Companion of the Most Noble Order of the Garter.

However, Andrew will still retain his dukedom as only an act of Parliament can remove it from him.

Some MPs are now calling for Parliament to intervene while others have said it is a decision for the Royal Family to lobby for the dukedom to be removed by Parliament.

Stephen Flynn, the SNP leader in Westminster, told The Telegraph: “I won’t sit silent – if an act of Parliament is required.”

He added: “There can be no justification from this Labour Government as to why that is not immediately happening.”

A Labour MP and former shadow cabinet minister, who asked not to be named, also called for Prince Andrew to lose his dukedom via an act of Parliament.

The MP said: “I do think he ought to be stripped of all titles.”

Rachael Maskell, the York Central MP, said she was personally considering bringing a Bill to Parliament on removing Prince Andrew’s dukedom.

However, Ed Miliband, the Environment Secretary and former Labour leader, said the Government should be guided by the Royal Family on the matter rather intervening on their own.

Mr Miliband said: “I think we’ll be guided by the Royal Family on this.

“I think the Royal Family have said that they didn’t want to take up parliamentary time with this.

“There are lots of other things that Parliament is discussing. I think it’s right [that] he’s given up his titles.”

Labour’s Education Secretary, Bridget Phillipson, said the Government "agree and support the decision” made by the Royal Family.

Labour’s Education Secretary, Bridget Phillipson, said the Government "agree and support the decision” made by the Royal Family.

The Minister appeared to rule out the Government launching action against Prince Andrew in Parliament but indicated it will be debated if an MP brings a Bill forward.

Phillipson said: “This is not something that the Government does, this is not a matter for Government business.

"But of course, it's always been the case in Parliament that individual members of Parliament are able to bring forward debates, discussion on, on any topic that they choose."
