Denmark’s former monarch Queen Margrethe has been forced to miss a public appearance due to falling ill.
The 85-year-old royal abdicated the throne in January 2024 for her son Frederik who now reigns as king.
Queen Margrethe was due to attend the 125th anniversary of the Sankt Lukas Foundation in Hellerup on Thursday.
The foundation provides welfare services across Denmark, including running hospices palliative care centres and daycare for childcare.
Queen Margrethe has been forced to miss a major engagement due to ill health.

The calendar of the northern European nation royal family now lists her appearance as “cancelled,” reportsDanish publication Billed-Bladet.
Official channels announced that Margrethe had become ill but did not share any details about her condition.
She was last seen in public last Sunday along with other Danish royals at Ryvangen Memorial Park in Copenhagen.
They had gathered for an event marking 80 years since Denmark’s liberation from German occupation at the end of World War Two.
No official word has been given on the former Danish monarch's condition.

Margrethe was seen using the aid of a cane to walk, which she had required the use of since 2023 after undergoing major back surgery.
Her absence comes just a month after she celebrated her landmark 85th birthday on April 16.
The Danish royal family gathered to celebrate with her Fredensborg Palace, the family’s spring and autumn residence which is often used for important events.
Current King Frederik, Queen Mary and their children, 19-year-old Crown Prince Christian, Princess Isabella, 18, and their youngest twins Prince Vincent and Princess Josephine, 14.

Also present was the Queen’s other son Prince Joachim and his children, Count Nikolai and Count Felix.
Margrethe’s sisters Princess Benedikte, 80, and Queen Anne-Marie of Greece, 78, were also pictured at the event.
The formerly reigning Danish Queen was Europe's longest serving monarch following the death of Queen Elizabeth.
She had ruled the small northern European nation since 1972, marking 52 years on the throne.
The family is also the continents oldest ruling monarchy, sitting in Copenhagen for 900 years
