The Duchess of York has had two cancer diagnoses over the past year

Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie have been "rallying around" their mother, Sarah Ferguson, after her health concerns, a royal source has claimed.

The Duchess of York, 64, announced on Sunday she had been diagnosed with malignant melanoma.

This came just months after undergoing a mastectomy to treat an early form of breast cancer.

A friend of the duchess claimed that her "family is rallying around," especially her two daughters.

They added: "They've been terrific since the summer."

Fergie released a statement today, stating she is going to "take some time to [herself]" amid the news of her second cancer diagnosis.

In the future, she wants to make the importance of testing a vital part of her public work.

Sarah's father, Major Ronald Ferguson, was diagnosed with skin cancer in the months before he died in 2003 from a heart attack.

Princess Beatrice, 35, is a patron of the British Skin Association, and works closely with the issue of skin cancer.

The royal source opined: "It would make sense for them to team up on this", referring to Fergie and Beatrice.

They continued: "[Fergie] was encouraged that people have said online that they have been prompted to get their moles checked out. If only one person did that, then it was worth speaking out.”

Sarah's friend admitted it was a "shock" for the former working royal to find out about her second cancer diagnosis.

They said: "It is hard to get your head around, particularly when you get over one and then get a second diagnosis."

However, Fergie’s attitude is "onwards and upwards". They continued telling People Magazine: "That’s the attitude, whatever’s thrown at her."

In her statement, Fergie admitted she had received treatment for her melanoma at the Mayrlife Clinic in Altaussee, Austria, before returning to her home in Windsor.

Her representative said: “She is undergoing further investigations to ensure that this has been caught in the early stages. Clearly, another diagnosis so soon after treatment for breast cancer has been distressing, but the Duchess remains in good spirits.”
