The Duchess of Sussex is celebrating seven years of marriage to her husband

Meghan Markle has appeared to drop a subtle reference to the sometimes-troubled journey of Prince Harry.

The Duchess of Sussex, 43, hinted at the saga as she took to Instagram to celebrate seven years of her marriage to Harry, 40, on Monday.

The post showed dozens of photos of the pair together pinned to a message board accompanied by the caption: “Seven years of marriage. A lifetime of stories.

“Thanks to all of you (whether by our side, or from afar) who have loved and supported us throughout our love story - we appreciate you,” she added.

Meghan also accompanied the post with an intriguing choice of music – The Proclaimers’ 1988 classic I’mGonna Be (500 Miles).

The song, written from the perspective of a particularly devoted male partner, features repeated expressions of commitment.

Throughout, the lead male voice lists of various labours and activities that, no matter how difficult or miserable, will always lead them back to their partner.

Included is the promise the singer “knowns” that he would be “the man who's workin' hard for you” and “When I come home, I know I'm gonna be the man who comes back home to you.”

The chart-topping song features the world-famous chant for its chorus: “But I would walk five hundred miles, and I would walk five hundred more, just to be the man who walked a thousand miles to fall down at your door.”

While I’m Gonna Be can obviously be interpreted as a statement to the close connection between Meghan and Harry, it may also have referenced the challenges to their relationship.

The Sussexes stepped down as working royals in 2020 before moving permanently to the US, ultimately continuing a rift between the couple and the rest of the Royal Family.

The “walking 500 miles” chorus to return to a loved one feels particularly prescient given the Duke of Sussex’s recent return from the UK after suffering a legal defeat.

Prince Harry

Harry took part in an explosive interview upon returning home after his legal defeat.

Harry had been back home to try and overturn an earlier decision to downgrade he and his family’s security detail.

The taxpayer funded protection is normally only afforded to working royals, forcing him to pick up the £1.5 million expenditure.

After failing to have the detail reinstated and returning to the US, Harry reignited the apparent feud with Buckingham Palace with an explosive BBC interview.

In the interview, the Duke claimed his father, King Charles, "won't speak to me because of this security stuff" and that he did “not know how much longer my father has" - in reference to Charles’ ongoing cancer treatment.

Given the context of Harry’s return home and the apparently strained relationship with other senior royals, the choice of song appears to carry more weight than initially appears.

Upon reuniting with Meghan, the couple shared some images of their “date night” earlier this month.

In the pics, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex were seen cheek to cheek as they enjoyed Beyoncé's Cowboy Carter tour in Los Angeles.

Harry was also seen sweetly planting a peck on the cheek of Meghan while she beamed with her eyes shut.

Writing alongside the carousel of pics and videos, Meghan penned: “About last night…. Thank you @beyonce and team for an amazing concert (and a very fun date night)! All love.”
