Motorists have been urged to stay away from the area whilst the situation is addressed

A Royal Family residence was forced to issue a statement online after a bridge on the same estate collapsed.

The bridge, located on King Charles's Balmoral Estate in Aberdeenshire, collapsed after substantial volumes of melting snow overwhelmed the infrastructure.

The incident follows weeks of severe winter weather that battered the Scottish region with persistent snowfall.

The road surface at the Spittal of Glen Muick car park gave way, causing significant damage that has undermined the bridge structure.

Access via the popular Glen Muick route has been severed as a result.

Estate officials have shut the crossing to all traffic and foot passengers.

Motorists have been urged to stay away from the area whilst the situation is addressed.

Balmoral Castle released a statement addressing the incident: "Unfortunately, due to a high volume of snowmelt, the road at the Spittal of Glen Muick car park has collapsed and undermined the bridge.

"The bridge is now closed to both vehicles and pedestrians. We will begin repair work as soon as possible."

Photographs published by the estate reveal the extent of the destruction, with tarmac linking the wooden bridge to the roadway having been substantially washed away.

Orange traffic cones now mark the hazardous area to prevent anyone from attempting to cross.

Restoration efforts are expected to commence at the earliest opportunity.

Loch Muick draws considerable numbers of visitors throughout the year and holds a 4.8-star rating on TripAdvisor, where reviewers have described the scenery as "stunning" and "amazing".

The area is renowned for its remarkable wildlife, with sightings of Golden Eagles reported by those exploring the grounds.

The location offers a relatively level walking path around the loch's edge and remains accessible by vehicle, with parking available for £5.

The 50,000-acre Balmoral Estate passed to King Charles III following the death of Queen Elizabeth II.

Royal connections to the area stretch back generations, with Queen Victoria and Prince Albert acquiring the castle in 1852.

Since ascending to the throne, King Charles has welcomed the public into his private Scottish residence through exclusive guided tours of rooms still used by the Royal Family.

The monarch has spoken openly about his deep affection for Scotland. During a speech marking the Scottish Parliament's 25th anniversary in 2024, he remarked: "Speaking from a personal perspective, Scotland has always had a uniquely special place in the hearts of my family and myself."

Charles also reflected on his mother's profound attachment to the estate, noting: "My late mother especially treasured the time spent at Balmoral, and it was there, in the most beloved of places, where she chose to spend her final days."
