The £1m prize money caps an extraordinary achievement for the young Englishman, who has established himself as the sport's dominant force.

With this triumph, Littler enters an exclusive club as only the fourth player in history to retain the PDC world title, standing alongside legends Phil Taylor, Adrian Lewis and Gary Anderson.

The teenager's remarkable ascent means that just two players now sit above him in the all-time PDC World Championship winners list.

Taylor leads with an extraordinary 14 titles, while Michael van Gerwen has claimed three.

Littler sits 12 world championships behind Taylor's record haul, and his dominant display against Van Veen will inevitably fuel speculation that 'The Nuke' could one day challenge what previously appeared an untouchable mark.

Littler maintained an average exceeding 107 for much of the contest, finishing with a formidable 106.02, while Van Veen could only manage just under 100.

The champion sealed victory with a 147 checkout, roaring in celebration towards the supportive Alexandra Palace crowd.

An emotional Littler shed tears as Sir Chris Hoy presented him with the Sid Waddell Trophy.

Van Veen, whose run to the final will see him climb to third in the world rankings and earn a Premier League debut, acknowledged his opponent's brilliance.

"Luke wasn't in the mood to give me any more chances. He played phenomenally," the Dutchman told Sky Sports. "I missed too many chances to make it an even game. That's why he's world number one by a margin now and back-to-back world champion."

Littler himself reflected on the significance of his achievement.

"It's very special," he told Sky Sports. "We've got to keep going, we've got to keep adding more titles. We can't stop here. We're still on this rollercoaster."
