Susanna Reid revealed that she was persuaded to get a checkup after hearing a royal cancer announcement.
Buckingham Palace announced that King Charles was diagnosed with a form of cancer in February, whilst in March, it was revealed that the Princess of Wales had been diagnosed with cancer and was undergoing treatment.
A month before the King announced his own prognosis, Sarah Ferguson was diagnosed with malignant melanoma, the most serious form of skin cancer, only six months after she was treated for breast cancer.
Speaking on Good Morning Britain, the Duchess opened up about her battle with the disease.
Ferguson said: “It’s a new normal. You can never say you’re cancer free but you can say I’m doing well, and I’m very lucky but I really am determined.
The Duchess of York stressed the importance in going to the doctors to get a check up: “Honestly, 1.2 mamograms are not being picked up. People are not going for their mamograms, they’re not being tested, they need to be tested, they can be tested. Don’t be frightened; here I am you know!”
Reid, co-host of the show, applauded Ferguson and revealed how the Duchess had inspired her to be proactive.
She admitted: “Your message had led me to go for a mammogram, because I was worried, because I had been avoiding it and it wasn’t the painful experience I had in my head that it was so thank you for that message.”
Sarah was diagnosed with the most serious form of skin cancer in January
Reid confirmed that her own test had returned back cancer free.
Ferguson agreed with Reid’s fears that the process can be a worrying one. She said: “You’re absolutely right Susanna, you get very frightened.”
She admitted that to cope with her deteriorating mental health as a result of the diagnosis, she threw herself into her writing, as well as supporting others.
The monarch returned to public-facing duties in April, whilst the Princess of Wales has not as she continues to focus on her health following the diagnosis.
Kate was hospitalised for 13 days earlier this year for abdominal surgery

Ferguson responded: “I am so proud of the King going to Cancer Research UK and becoming the royal patron, going out there and talking to all these people.
“It gives everybody that wonderful feeling that they are being listened to, I thought it was very brave for him to do that.
“The lovely Princess Catherine doing the video was so brave, I think family unity is an extraordinary thing.
“I am so proud, I am sending lots of love and lots of support. We can all rally together.”
