The 19-year-old heir to the Spanish throne was seen running across the port

Princess Leonor of Spain shared an emotional reunion with her mother Queen Letizia on Saturday after four months apart.

The 19-year-old heir to the Spanish throne was seen running across the port to embrace her mother in Panama City.

The touching moment came as Queen Letizia made the journey from Spain for an unofficial visit to see her daughter.

The pair chatted excitedly as they caught up in person for the first time since January.

The mother and daughter last saw each other in January when Leonor first embarked on the naval phase of her military training.

The princess is serving as a midshipman aboard the Juan Sebastian de Elcano. Their reunion took place at the Port of Fuerte Amador in Panama City.

Leonor looked smart in her naval uniform whilst greeting her mother on the dock. Queen Letizia opted for a casual look, wearing white jeans and a white t-shirt for the dockside meeting.

The Queen later joined her daughter onboard the Juan Sebastian de Elcano for a special reception. For this occasion, Letizia changed into a striking red halter neck jumpsuit.

The outfit marked a return to her signature stylish appearance after the casual attire worn earlier. The mother and daughter were able to spend precious time together during this brief stopover in Panama.

The brief stopover included a visit to Panama Viejo, the old part of the city. The royal pair also enjoyed lunch at the El Nacional restaurant.

Their itinerary featured a trip to a museum that King Felipe had visited in 2019. These activities allowed mother and daughter to make the most of their limited time together in Panama City.

The reunion provided a welcome break from Leonor's intensive naval training schedule. Princess Leonor is spending a total of six months at sea as part of her naval training.

During her journey, she has already visited Peru, Chile, Brazil and Uruguay. Her voyage will continue with stops in Colombia and the Dominican Republic.

The training will conclude with a visit to New York. This extensive naval experience forms a crucial part of her military education as the future queen of Spain.

Prior to her naval training, Leonor spent a year in the army at the General Military Academy of Zaragoza. She will undertake her final year of military training in the air force. This comprehensive military education is part of her preparation as heir presumptive to the Spanish throne.

In this role, she will one day take the title of Commander in Chief of the armed forces. Upon joining the navy, Leonor wrote that she was continuing her military training "with great enthusiasm".
