Eugenie was reflecting about her own experience with a childhood health battle

Princess Eugenie has spoken candidly about a fear she has for her children.

The 35-year-old royal, the youngest daughter of Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson, made the remarks at the Duke of Cornwall Spinal Treatment Centre’s at Salisbury District Hospital.

Eugenie shares two children with marketing executive Jack Brooksbank, August and Ernest.

She was speaking while attending a casual event at the hospital’s Horatio Garden where she greeted patients and discussed her own experience suffering from scoliosis aged just 12 in 2002.

Now, as a parent herself, Eugenie imagined her own mum and dad must have been “absolutely terrified” when she was battling the spinal condition.

Putting herself in their shoes, the royal admitted she was hyper vigilant over her two kids.

“With my own children, I panic if one of them bumps their heads in case we have to take them to A&E, or even if they just want to cut paper with art scissors,” she revealed while speaking with The Telegraph.

She also recalled her Eugenie’s mother, Sarah Ferguson, was on hand to try and comfort her daughter who the royal described as “amazing”.

To help break down her daughters fear of stigma, Fergie would ask her if she could show the scar to others.

“My daughter is superhuman, you’ve got to check out her scar,” the 35-year-old remembered her mother saying.

“All of sudden it was a badge of honour – a cool thing I had. It trained my brain that it’s ok, scars are cool. It became a positive memory, a part of me, that I could do something with in the future. I could help heal other people,” Eugenie explained.

Her recollection and new perspective as a parent has prompted Eugenie to take a role in helping families dealing with children awaiting spinal surgery as she once did.

The 35-year-old said she often receives messages from nervous parents whose children were awaiting the sometimes harrow procedure and long reciliation afterwards.

To help, Eugenie said she speaks to the children over the phone to help their confidence ahead of their operation.

“A little voice comes on the phone and they don’t know what questions to ask. I tell them not to feel ashamed – not just of the scar but of the whole experience; bed pans, the lot,” she explained.

Referring to the “literal angels” nurses, Eugenie advised the children never to “feel nervous about letting them look after you”.

Thinking back to her own time in rehabilitation with The Telegraph, Eugenie remembered how important her family were.

“I couldn’t get out of bed or do anything for myself,” Eugenie revealed to The Telegraph about her time in hospital where she was forced to be secluded inside.

She explained: “All I cared about was where my parents and sister were.”

At the event, Eugenie celebrated the work from charity Horatio’s Garden to provide “outdoor space for patients with spinal injuries”.

“Having worked with Horatio’s Garden, I’ve seen how the garden is so transformative for patients. Nature is so healing; hearing the sound of the birds and running water,” she explained.

Her words bore a resemblance to a similar statement issued by Princess Kate.
