The Prince and Princess of Monaco faced an unexpected change of plans last week

Princess Charlene and Prince Albert of Monaco are marking their 14th wedding anniversary today, just days after the princess withdrew from a planned royal visit to Japan at the last minute.

The couple, who married on July 1, 2011, at the Prince's Palace of Monaco, faced an unexpected change of plans last week when the princess and their 10-year-old twins, Prince Jacques and Princess Gabriella, pulled out of the trip.

The Palace cited "current events taking place in the Middle East" as the reason for their withdrawal, though no specific details were provided about how the Japan visit was affected by regional tensions.

The cancellation came on June 25, with Princess Stéphanie stepping in to accompany her brother on the diplomatic visit.

Regional tensions had escalated following US airstrikes targeting Iran on June 21, ordered by President Trump during the ongoing conflict with Israel.

Several European Governments subsequently issued updated travel advisories for the region.

The situation was further complicated when Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba cancelled his planned NATO Summit attendance amid rising tensions with Washington.

Trump's comparison of the Iran airstrikes to the atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki during World War II generated additional outrage in Japan.

Prince Albert proceeded with the Japan visit to represent Monaco at the 2025 World Expo in Osaka.

He was joined by Princess Stéphanie and her children: Camille Gottlieb, Pauline Ducruet, and Louis Ducruet with his wife Marie.

The Monégasque delegation's packed schedule on June 28 included a traditional Japanese tea ceremony and an official welcome reception with Princess Hisako of Takamado.

The visit also featured a performance by Monaco's Orchestra of the Prince's Guards.

The anniversary marks 14 years since the royal couple exchanged vows at the Prince's Palace of Monaco on July 1, 2011.

Princess Charlene's wedding dress for the religious ceremony was designed by Giorgio Armani.

The off-white gown was made of duchess silk satin and featured a Bardot neckline, 40,000 Swarovski crystals, and 20,000 mother-of-pearl teardrops.

The dress took 2,500 hours to create by three seamstresses.
