Princess Anne's royal engagement was slammed as "shameful" due to her travel arrangements.

The Princess Royal travelled to Aylesbury, a town in Buckinghamshire, to carry out various royal engagements.

Princess Anne surprised and "delighted" residents after getting out of a helicopter in Alfred Rose Memorial Park.

The 73-year-old later left the same way after a brief stop-off in the town.

Graham Smith, the CEO of the anti-monarchy group Republic, took to X to criticise the Princess Royal's travel arrangements.

He wrote on X: "Shameful. Aylesbury is less than an hour's drive from Windsor, but Anne takes a helicopter."

Fans took to social media to defend Princess Anne, with one saying: "Well, yeah, but it would be an hour's journey by a 15-vehicle motorcade that would have taken a team of 10 people a week to organise."

Another royal fan said: "If you had one, you'd use it too!"

King Charles III's younger sister may have been visiting HMP Aylesbury, which is located a short distance from the park on Bierton Road.

Thames Valley Police shared a photo of the King's Helicopter in Alfred Rose Memorial Park.

A spokesperson for the force said: "Today Aylesbury welcomed a very special visitor!

"Her Royal Highness the Princess Royal made a fleeting visit to Aylesbury this afternoon, much to the delight of local residents in the Alfred Rose Park.

Princess Anne is one of the main members of the Royal Family carrying out engagements since King Charles and Princess Kate temporarily stepped back from duties.

In January, Kensington Palace announced the Princess of Wales underwent abdominal surgery.

She has since been recuperating at Adelaide Cottage after spending 13 days in The London Clinic.
