The Prince of Wales revealed that his wife had thrown herself into preparation for her recent trip to Italy

Prince William has spoken of his immense pride in the Princess of Wales following her recent Italian tour focused on children's early development.

Speaking to Jamie Theakston and Amanda Holden on Heart Radio's breakfast programme, the prince revealed Kate returned home energised from the visit.

"So proud, very, very proud. She's been amazing," William said. "She's been through so much in the last couple of years, particularly. She'd been looking forward to the Italian trip a lot, and so I'm really glad it went really well."

The broadcast took place from a café on the Isles of Scilly, where William was conducting engagements, including the opening of new hospital facilities.

The prince also offered a heartfelt tribute to his wife during the interview, describing her as both an exceptional mother and partner.

"She's an amazing mum and an amazing wife and literally our family couldn't cope without her, so she's been absolutely stunning, really has," William said.

Her journey to Italy marked her first official overseas engagement in over three years, with a royal aide describing it as a "huge moment" for the princess.

The last time she travelled abroad for official duties was a trip to America more than three years ago.

During her visit to Reggio Emilia, Catherine was greeted with an enthusiastic reception from locals as she explored an innovative early childhood teaching approach developed in the Italian city.

William revealed that his wife had thrown herself into preparation for the trip, dedicating considerable time to studying relevant materials.

"She wanted to go and do lots of research, she spends God knows how much time now looking through all the paperwork," he explained.

The prince added that Kate has developed genuine expertise in the field, joking about the extent of her dedication at home.

"She's a proper pro on early years, and so most evenings I'm fighting to get past in the bedroom all the paperwork that she's got lined up ready to read."

William acknowledged that Catherine is gradually increasing her international commitments but stressed the importance of managing her energy levels.

"It's kind of, just sort of edging herself back into doing more and more of those trips," he told the presenters. The prince explained that overseas royal engagements are particularly taxing, requiring constant attention and interaction.

"Away trips like that take a lot out of you because you're on sort of permanent receive and send the whole time, and so we have to balance that, make sure she's OK and rested, but yeah, she's in good form," he said.

The couple's previous major joint tour was their visit to the Caribbean in March 2022 for the Platinum Jubilee celebrations.
