Prince William must be ready before he eventually takes on his future role as King, according to Charles's former royal butler, Grant Harrold.

Speaking exclusively to GB News at his book launch for "The Royal Butler: My remarkable life of royal service" at The Rubens at the Palace, opposite Buckingham Palace, Mr Harrold said the Prince of Wales was gaining vital experience as King Charles continues his cancer treatment.

Referring to the Palace’s public approach to discussing the King’s health, Mr Harrold said: “It’s good that they’ve been so open about it. That’s really unusual.

“William is stepping up, and Kate and Camilla are stepping up, which is good. William stepping up is important because one day that will be his role.

“His grandmother had to step up when her father, George VI, died of cancer. And unfortunately, we know how that ended because obviously, he sadly died from cancer.

“But she had the opportunity to stand in for him on many occasions and develop the role, so she knew what was expected.

“It’s important that William does the same because what you don’t want, God forbid, is that something happens to the King, and William’s going, ‘What do I do?’ So it is good that he’s getting the experience.”

Mr Harrold, who worked for King Charles for seven years, noted that Queen Elizabeth II’s early duties during the final years of her father’s reign left her well prepared for her life as monarch.

He suggested the same kind of preparation was now crucial for William.

The former butler, who regularly comments on royal affairs, welcomed the visibility of other senior royals at this time.

He explained that the Queen and Princess of Wales were providing important continuity alongside William.

King Charles has slightly reduced his public schedule since announcing his cancer diagnosis last year.

Palace aides have emphasised that the monarch remains committed to his duties despite treatment.

For William, Mr Harrold said the current period offered both challenge and opportunity.

By taking on more of the public-facing work, the Prince of Wales was developing the experience needed for the crown while also demonstrating the stability of the monarchy.
