The Diana Award recognises the achievements of inspirational young leaders

Prince Harry will carry out a small engagement for the Diana Awards on Thursday morning before returning to California later that day.

The Duke of Sussex is expected to meet young people connected to the charity set up in memory of his late mother, Diana, Princess of Wales.

The Diana Award recognises the achievements of inspirational young leaders and changemakers across the world.

It will be Harry’s final event in the UK this week, following a string of high-profile appearances in London and Nottingham.

On Monday, he attended the WellChild Awards in central London, where he celebrated the achievements of seriously ill children and their families. In a speech, he praised the charity’s work: “So much has happened since those early days [of WellChild], for me, for you and for WellChild.

“The world has thrown a fair few challenges our way. But through it all, WellChild has remained rock solid in its mission: to give children and young people with complex medical needs the chance to thrive, not in hospital, but at home, surrounded by family, friends, and community.”

The Duke joined families and children supported by the charity, taking part in light-hearted moments including a balloon-sword fight with a young guest, and ad-libbing jokes during his speech.

On Tuesday, Harry travelled to Nottingham to visit the Community Recording Studio, a project he has supported for more than a decade.

While there, he announced a personal donation of £1.1 million to BBC Children in Need to support grassroots youth projects tackling violence and knife crime.

He described the gift as an “investment in futures” and praised the work of local young people involved in the initiative.

Harry met with staff, volunteers and performers at the studio, watching a rap performance and embracing one of the young people on stage. He also spoke about the importance of creative projects in steering young people away from violence and towards positive opportunities.

His visit to Nottingham had many of the hallmarks of a royal engagement, with barriers, organisation and media coverage resembling the type of events he once undertook as a working member of the Royal Family.

The Diana Award engagement will round off Harry’s UK trip before he returns to Montecito, California, where he lives with Meghan and their two children, Prince Archie, six, and Princess Lilibet, four.

Harry’s return to the UK this week has drawn attention to the contrast between his philanthropic work and the commercial path taken by Meghan, who is focusing on her new lifestyle brand and Netflix projects.

Veteran royal correspondents have described a sense of “déjà vu” at seeing the Duke back in Britain carrying out public engagements.

It remains to be seen how often Harry will return to the UK for events of this nature, but his appearances this week have underlined his continuing desire to be involved in causes connected to both his mother’s legacy and his longstanding charitable commitments.
