The Duke of Sussex is thought to have consulted his uncle about a potential name change

GB News’s Anne Diamond has criticised Prince Harry’s latest move, which she described as “like declaring a divorce, only worse”.

The Duke of Sussex is thought to have consulted his uncle, Earl Charles Spencer, about the prospect of changing his surname to Spencer.

Speaking on the People’s Channel, Anne hit out at Charles’s estranged youngest son who according to the Daily Mail, addressed the issue with Earl Spencer during a trip to the UK.

“I can’t think of a more hurtful insult that Harry could deliver to his father, can you?”, she asked.

“To say, ‘I no longer want your name. I want my mother’s name. It’s like declaring a divorce, only worse.”

Royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams said the extraordinary report underlines the ‘toxicity’ of the ongoing royal row.

“You wonder precisely what else the Sussexes could do”, he said.

“We saw Harry recently on the BBC with all sorts of accusations, some of them rather fantastic.

“There’s no doubt in the Oprah interview, where Meghan floated the prospect of Archie not becoming a prince because of some kind of racism was utter nonsense.

“The moment they became grandchildren of the monarch, both of them had the option of taking the HRH.

“The problem with the Sussexes is, clearly very little has been thought out. They are supposed to have advisers.”

Harry changing his name would see his and Meghan Markle’s children, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet, also change their names to Spencer.

King Charles is known to view his Mountbatten-Windsor family name with pride and adoration like his father Prince Philip did.

His youngest son wanting to rid himself of the name will likely come as a crushing blow to the King who is still battling cancer.

Naming is clearly an issue the Sussexes concern themselves with and Meghan made this evident during an episode in her Netflix show, With Love, Meghan, which was released earlier this year.

In a viral moment from episode two, Meghan corrected actress Mindy Kaling for calling her “Meghan Markle”, saying “I’m Sussex now”.

Speaking about the significance of the name change, she said: “You have kids, and you go, ‘no, I share my name with my children.’”

"I didn't know how meaningful it would be to me but it just means so much to go 'This is OUR family name. Our little family name,'" she insisted.

Kaling appeared to take the correction in stride, nodding in agreement and responding: "Now I know, and I love it."
