The Duke of Edinburgh was appointed to the Order of the Thistle to mark his birthday

Prince Andrew lost out on another prestigious honour as King Charles backed Prince Edward.

The Duke of Edinburgh was appointed to the Order of the Thistle to mark his 60th birthday on Sunday.

The Order of the Thistle is the highest honour in Scotland and comprises of 16 knights or ladies and the monarch as Sovereign of the Order.

The Duke of York was stripped of his military titles and patronages in 2022 amid accusations of sexual abuse.

He also stepped down as a working member of the Royal Family in late 2019 following a disastrous interview on his friendship with Jeffrey Epstein.

Prince Andrew is also no longer able to use the style “His Royal Highness” in any official capacity.

Prince Edward was awarded the role instead of his brother joining other members of the Royal Family in the order including Queen Camilla, Prince William and Princess Anne.

A statement by the palace on social media read: "On the occasion of The Duke of Edinburgh’s 60th birthday tomorrow, His Majesty The King has been graciously pleased to appoint His Royal Highness to the Most Ancient and Most Noble Order of the Thistle."

Some famous Scottish figures in the order are SNP politician George Reid and the former lord advocate of Scotland, Elish Angiolini.

The Royal Family website describes the position as recognising “Scottish men and women who have held public office or who have contributed in a particular way to national life.”

Although the legend dates back to the year 809AD, according to the Royal Family website it is possible that the order was actually founded by Scots King James III.

The duke’s appointment will be effective from March 10 and an installation ceremony is expected to take place in the summer.

Just one day after his appointment, the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh stepped out for the Commonwealth Day Service at Westminster Abbey.

Sophie stunned in a Suzannah London cream coat and a Jane Taylor Damona hat paired with Stuart Weitzmann high heels.

The duchess finished her look off with a simple pair of hanging pearl earrings and a colourful dress.

Days before the duke’s birthday, Sophie made an emotional tribute to her husband during a royal event.

During her speech, the duke looked visibly moved as he put his hands over his face and wiped a finger at the corner of his eye.

In June, Sophie and Edward will celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary; the couple walked down the aisle in 1999.

Sophie said: "He is the best of fathers, the most loving of husbands and still is my best friend.

“So here's to you my darling Edward and may I along with all your family and so many friends and many others wish you the Happiest of Birthdays!"
