The Duchess of Sussex has been a long time friend and supporter of Kelly McKee Zajfen

Meghan Markle became emotional at a Los Angeles charity tennis event on Saturday, dabbing away tears as she listened to a poignant tribute.

The Duchess of Sussex attended the annual George Zajfen Tennis Tournament alongside Prince Harry, where her longtime friend Kelly McKee Zajfen delivered a moving speech about her late son George.

The nine-year-old boy died tragically in 2022 after contracting Covid-19 and viral meningitis.

Standing courtside at the Los Angeles Tennis Club, Meghan was captured becoming visibly emotional during Mrs Zajfen’s heartfelt address.

Prince Harry remained close by his wife's side, offering quiet support as she struggled to contain her tears.

After, Meghan shared photos of her embracing Mrs Zajfen to social media, adding in a caption that she was "proudly supporting" the event.

"Our other favourite Lily," read another caption, referencing the Sussexes' own daughter Lilibet, on an image of Harry hugging the Zajfens' daughter, Lily.

Mrs Zajfen also took to social media to express heartfelt appreciation for the Sussexes' involvement in the memorial tournament.

"Harry and Meghan, you have been such a guiding light for our family not just in the way you have shown up in friendship but how you have shown up through the incredible work the Archewell Foundation does every day," she wrote.

Mrs Zajfen praised the couple's "commitment to community" and their "fierce loyalty and love in friendship," thanking them for "holding Georgie in your hearts and helping us carry his light forward."

The duchess and Mrs Zajfen's friendship began almost twenty years ago when they were introduced through Meghan’s former husband, Trevor Engelson.

Following George's tragic death, the Duchess of Sussex has been a regular source of comfort for the grieving mother.

"She's been by my side, especially since Georgie died, and I cherish our friendship very much," Mrs Zajfen's mother shared during a recent Instagram Q&A session.

The former model described Meghan as the “most amazing, nurturing, fun, loving human".

Saturday’s event was sponsored by the Duke and Duchess’s Archewell Foundation.

The tournament serves as an annual fundraiser for the Alliance for Children's Rights, supporting vulnerable children and families across Los Angeles.

Originally established over two decades ago, the event was renamed in honour of George Zajfen following his tragic, sudden death.

Mrs Zajfen would go on to co-found Alliance of Moms, a community supporting young mothers, which benefits from the tournament proceeds.

For the event, Meghan wore a crisp white halterneck dress by Carolina Herrera with a pair of Jimmy Choo kitten heels and a Loro Piana handbag.

Her jewellery remained understated, wearing only 24-carat gold Polène studs and a pear-shaped diamond ring believed to have been a gift from Harry.
