Meghan Markle has laughed off critics of her work on the legal drama Suits as “basic” while clashing with a guest on the new series of her Netflix show.

The Duchess of Sussex launched the second series of With Love, Meghan on Tuesday, which saw her entertain a number of celebrity guests.

In one episode, Meghan and her close friend Heather Dorak welcomed mixologist Payman Bahmani-Bailey where the trio discussed his profession.

Upon the expert’s mentioning of studying in New York, the Duchess excitedly interjected to ask if he had watched Suits.

Meghan starred as Rachel Zane on the popular American legal drama, playing the role for seven seasons before leaving ahead of her marriage to Prince Harry.

The Duchess inquired: "Did you watch Suits?”

"No, no, I don't watch basic cable," Mr Bahmani-Bailey shot back, adding: "I like shows with curse words and stuff.”

The quickfire exchange prompted a chuckle from Meghan, who opted for a simple response.

"Great, I love it," she said with a smirk.

After her departure, Suits continued for another two seasons before finally concluding in 2019.

Earlier this year, Meghan expressed her continuing fondness for the drama and celebrated its renewed popularity on Netflix.

"I'm not surprised that people are rediscovering Suits because it was so well written and so well produced,” she praised.

The Duchess revealed she thinks of the show as a “time capsule” from a different time in her life.

Despite moving on, she has maintained one memento from her time as Rachel Zane.

"I still have the pencil skirt from the first episode! That’s the one thing I kept,” Meghan told People Magazine.

Amid the release of the latest instalment of her Netflix show, the Duchess mounted a similar defence of her media profile while speaking on The Circuit podcast with host Emily Chang.

“If you know your audience, if you know your demographic... They love the show,” the Duchess declared, batting away a question about criticism of the first series of With Love, Meghan.

She continued: “My partners love the show and that’s why we have a season two and why we have more fun coming.”

Regarding her critics, Meghan wondered with Ms Chang if there may have been a more cynical reason behind the derision.

“I think oftentimes the negative voices, are they saying negative things and then secretly going home and making single skillet spaghetti? Possibly. And that’s alright, they’re trying to pay the bills,” she began with a grin.

“That’s for them to sort out if they’re comfortable doing it at someone else’s detriment,” Meghan said.
