Meghan and Harry call their daughter Princess Lilibet for first time as they announce she has been christened
Meghan Markle and Prince Harry have referred to their daughter as Princess Lilibet for the first time in a statement announcing her christening.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex's children Archie and Lilibet became prince and princess when their grandfather, King Charles, acceded to the throne.
A spokesperson for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex told GB News: "I can confirm that Princess Lilibet Diana was christened on Friday, March 3 by the Archbishop of Los Angeles, the Rev John Taylor."
This is the first time Lilibet has been referred to as a princess publicly.
Meghan Markle had previously spoken about her disappointment at the fact her eldest child Archie Harrison was not given the title of prince.
Archie and Lilibet's titles as princess and prince will be used in formal settings, but not everyday use by the couple.
However, the Sussexes are keen not to deny their children their birth-right, but wish to let Archie and Lilibet decide for themselves when they are older, if they wish to keep using their titles or drop them later on.
Buckingham Palace have stated that the Royal Family website “will now be updated in due course” to reflect the titles.
At the time of the late Queen’s death and the King’s accession, a spokesman for the King pledged to update Archie and Lilibet’s names on the site “as and when we get information”.
Meghan and Harry invited King Charles, Camilla, Prince William and the Princess of Wales, a source told People.
However, none of the senior members of the Royal Family attended the christening.
The invitation to the quartet of royals could be an olive branch from Sussexes ahead of King Charles's Coronation.
Reacting to the news, Royal Reporter Cameron Walker stated that the move may have been made with the Coronation later this year in mind.
He told GB News: "It would suggest to me that Harry and Meghan are very much trying to create some kind of olive branch to reach out to their extended family here in the United Kingdom.
"At the same time the Sussexes are perhaps, let's say in negotiations to attend the Coronation later on this year."
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have yet to confirm whether they will attend the Coronation in May 2023.
