The Duchess of Sussex has confirmed she and her children will not attend the Coronation

Meghan Markle is determined for Archie and Lilibet to have a close relationship with King Charles, according to a source.

Last week it was announced that Prince Harry will attend King Charles's Coronation on his own while the rest of his family remains in California.

However, Meghan Markle reportedly does not want any more rifts with the Royal Family.

Instead, the Duchess of Sussex wants her children to be close to their grandfather due to her being estranged from her own father, Thomas Markle.

According to a source, Meghan wants Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet to know King Charles as they will not have a relationship with her father.

The source said: "Meghan doesn’t want any more rifts. She wants her children to know their grandfather, Charles, particularly when they are not going to know their other grandfather.

"She does hope they will meet and hopes her decision will be seen as an unselfish one, as it was best to keep the attention on His Majesty."

It comes as King Charles is said to be "very disappointed" Meghan Markle is not coming to his Coronation and that as a result he will not get to see Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet next month.

On Wednesday, Buckingham Palace confirmed that Prince Harry will attend the landmark event on his own.

Meghan Markle, Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet will remain in California instead of flying to the UK.

However, the King is said to have wanted the Duchess of Sussex and her children to attend the Coronation, according to a source.

They told The Sun: "The King is happy that Harry, his son, who he calls his 'darling boy' will be at the Abbey.

"He wanted him there. It is sad, he is very disappointed that he won't see Meghan or his grandchildren but understands the situation."

Prince Archie's fourth birthday falls on the same day as King Charles's Coronation.

Omid Scobie, a friend of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, claimed that Prince Archie's birthday was considered in their decision making.

Scobie wrote: "I understand that Archie's fourth birthday (also on May 6) played a factor in the couple's decision."
