The Duchess of Sussex's role as godmother extends further than was previously publicly known

Meghan Markle travelled to Chicago to witness her godson receive his First Communion at Holy Name Cathedral on Saturday.

The boy's mother is one of Meghan's closest friends from her time at Northwestern University, according to an insider close to the Sussexes.

Despite her high profile, the Duchess of Sussex blended in with other families attending the Catholic ceremony.

"Meghan arrived early to the church and waited with other families and friends in the pews and that she didn't use a separate entrance or have any special accommodations," the insider told People.

Her only distinguishing feature was the presence of a personal bodyguard.

Natalie Martinez, a local television reporter who was present at the same mass for her own daughter's First Communion, captured an image of the young girl walking past the Duchess of Sussex in her pew.

The photograph appeared briefly on social media, accompanied by the caption: "Yep, that is exactly who you think it is to her right."

However, the image was swiftly removed from Ms Martinez's account after only a short time online.

The reporter has not explained why she took down the post, leaving unanswered whether she received a request to delete it.

Prior to this revelation, she was understood to be godmother only to Remi and Rylan Litt, daughters of her close friends Benita and Darren Litt.

The Litt sisters held a special place at the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s wedding in 2018, serving as bridesmaids during the ceremony.

The Chicago godson now adds to this number, though neither he nor his parents have been identified publicly.

Given that Catholic children typically receive their First Communion around the age of seven or eight, the boy is likely a similar age to Prince Archie.

The Duchess's connection to Chicago stems from her university years, having studied at Northwestern between 1999 and 2003.

The institution sits approximately 12 miles from the cathedral where Saturday's ceremony took place.

During her time there, Meghan earned a bachelor's degree combining theatre and international studies.

Meanwhile, the Sussexes have their own milestone approaching this week. Prince Archie, the couple's eldest child, will mark his seventh birthday on Wednesday, May 6.
