The royals distanced themselves from the trusted companion of former Queen Elizabeth II after she became embroiled in a race row

Lady Susan Hussey, a close acquaintance of the Royals, was invited to King Charles’ birthday celebrations earlier this month, despite her recent troubled history with the family.

The British noblewoman, who served as Queen Elizabeth II’s Woman of the Bedchamber departed from royal duties late last year after controversial comments at a reception hosted by Queen Camilla.

Lady Susan was attending the event, held as part of the Preventing Sexual Violence in Conflict initiative, when she interacted with domestic violence charity founder Ngozi Fulani.

According to Fulani, Lady Susan had asked where she came from, and though Fulani insisted she was British, Hussey reportedly asked where she was “really from”.

After backlash to the comments which were perceived as racist by many, Lady Susan apologised and stepped back from royal duties.

Mail on Sunday’s Charlotte Griffiths commented on Lady Hussey’s invitation to the royal affair.

“She’s someone who was momentarily pushed out into the cold and was let back into the fold, unlike Andrew and Harry.

“I just feel like she has been invited to a lot of things, like the coronation and I feel like they’re almost making amends for that time they had to make a real show of punishing her for her comments.

“She has left the royal household but she’s still a friend, she’s still William's godmother and I think its really nice she was invited.

“And she should have been really because she’s done decades and decades of royal service for that family.”
