King Charles was left unfazed after a TV star accidentally called him "mate" at Buckingham Palace.

Television presenter Sam Thompson has revealed an awkward encounter with King Charles, where he accidentally addressed the monarch as "mate" during a prestigious reception.

The 32-year-old attended the King's Trust Awards event on Wednesday, which celebrated young people supported by the charity. Thompson later took to Instagram to share his embarrassment over the informal greeting.

"Also called the king 'mate' which was mortifying but he was cool about it!" Thompson wrote in his social media post.

The slip-up occurred whilst Thompson was presenting an award at the star-studded gathering, which brought together celebrity ambassadors and award recipients.

The exclusive reception attracted numerous high-profile guests, including Hollywood actor George Clooney and his wife Amal, television presenter Declan Donnelly, and Made in Chelsea star Jamie Laing.

Thompson shared photographs from the event on Instagram, including a group shot featuring the celebrity attendees alongside King Charles. The image showed Thompson and radio presenter Melvin Odoom positioned at the back of the gathering.

Odoom later commented on Thompson's post, joking: "You and me got done dirty at the back," accompanied by a laughing emoji.

Thompson wrote: "After spending some time with him, his story is one that I think will resonate with a lot of young men his age and I know this is only the beginning for him."
