King Charles will host a milestone event as the 75-year-old monarch returns to royal duties.

In a new statement from Buckingham Palace, Charles is confirmed to be returning to work after being diagnosed with a form of cancer two months ago.

The King and Queen will host the Emperor and Empress of Japan for a state visit in June at the government's request.

Charles maintained a close relationship with Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako and has visited the nation five times as the Prince of Wales.

The King was present for the enthronement of Emperor Naruhito in 2019 and Emperor Akihito in 1990 and also visited the country in 2008, 1986 and 1970.

The Emperor and Empress of Japan also attended the funeral of the late Queen Elizabeth II in September 2022.

During the visit, the Emperor attended a reception hosted by Charles for the Heads of State and Official Overseas Guests at Buckingham Palace.

The statement from Buckingham Palace read: "His Majesty The King will shortly return to public-facing duties after a period of treatment and recuperation following his recent cancer diagnosis.

"To help mark this milestone, The King and Queen will make a joint visit to a cancer treatment centre next Tuesday, where they will meet medical specialists and patients.

"This visit will be the first in a number of external engagements His Majesty will undertake in the weeks ahead.

"In addition, The King and Queen will host Their Majesties The Emperor and Empress of Japan for a State Visit in June, at the request of HM Government."

The King will resume his duties from as early as next week when he will visit a cancer treatment centre with the Queen.

The monarch will meet with medical specialists and patients on Tuesday in a bid to raise awareness of the importance of early diagnosis.

The Palace has not confirmed whether or not King Charles will attend his Birthday Parade, D-Day Commemorations, Garden Parties, Royal Ascot or an Autumn Tour overseas with Queen Camilla.

However, royal aides have noted that the King's duties will "remain subject to doctors’ advice nearer the time."

A Buckingham Palace spokesperson concluded: "His Majesty is greatly encouraged to be resuming some public-facing duties and very grateful to his medical team for their continued care and expertise."
