Nigeria's President will be welcomed to the United Kingdom for a State Visit in March 2026, with King Charles and Queen Camilla serving as hosts.

This diplomatic occasion marks a significant milestone, representing the first state visit from the African nation in nearly four decades.

The last time a Nigerian head of state received such an honour was back in 1989, making the upcoming visit a notable renewal of formal ties between the two countries. The Sunday Times's report regarding the Nigerian State Visit follows an exceptionally busy period for royal hosting duties.

This triple hosting arrangement last took place in 1988, highlighting just how unusual the past year proved for ceremonial diplomacy at the highest level.

The leaders who travelled to Britain during this remarkable year came from three of the nation's closest allies.

French President Emmanuel Macron arrived alongside his wife Brigitte in July, followed by US President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump in September, with German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier and his wife Elke Büdenbender completing the trio in early December.

While the royal calendar typically accommodates two incoming state visits annually, three in a single year remains a rare occurrence. The additional engagement came about through evolving diplomatic circumstances rather than initial planning.

In his initial invitation letter, delivered to Trump in the Oval Office by Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer in February 2025, the King suggested such an informal stay would present a "valuable chance to plan a historic second State Visit to the United Kingdom."

However, negotiations between the White House and British government officials responsible for coordinating diplomatic engagements proved challenging. Scheduling conflicts affecting both the monarch and the president made the original concept unworkable.

Given America's status as Britain's most significant ally, officials determined that a complete state visit with full ceremonial honours represented the optimal outcome. With the German President's visit already confirmed for early December, September emerged as the only viable window, leading to Trump's arrival on 17 September.

Windsor Castle assumed hosting responsibilities throughout 2025 as Buckingham Palace underwent extensive renovation work.

The London residence required significant upgrades to its electrical systems and cabling, alongside comprehensive refurbishment of numerous state rooms.

The alternative venue allowed the royal family to showcase a different approach to diplomatic hospitality, centred on the historic town surrounding the millennium-old fortress.

Prince William and Princess Kate took on welcoming duties for all three visiting delegations.

Security requirements prevented similar arrangements for the American visit, with Trump arriving via Marine One helicopter into Windsor's parkland after spending the previous night in London.

Traditional carriage processions resumed for the German delegation in December, allowing members of the public to witness the royal party ascending towards the castle.
