The Princess of Wales has been present a two major royal engagements in the last week

Kate Middleton is said to be “listening to her body” as she returns to royal duties following her cancer treatment and the announcement she was in remission in January, a former royal spokesperson has said.

The observation comes after it was announced the Princess of Wales would be absent from Royal Ascot moments before she was due to appear earlier today.

Kate's name appeared on the official carriage list published at midday, confirming she would travel in the second carriage with William during the traditional procession.

However, Kensington Palace announced her withdrawal before 12.30pm, less than two hours before the 2pm procession was due to begin.

Queen Elizabeth's former spokeswoman Ailsa Anderson said Kate is "being sensible” in her gradual return to full royal life, People Magazine reported.

She believed the Princess was “listening to what her body is telling her and easing back into public life".

Kate attended two major events in the days before Royal Ascot, which GB News understands she was disappointed not to attend.

The Princess of Wales was a central figure at Trooping the Colour with William and their children on June 14.

During the King’s official birthday celebrations, she took centre stage by standing on the dais alongside King Charles and Queen Camilla.

"It was a very powerful image of our next Queen alongside her father-in-law who has made no secret of the respect he has for Catherine, especially after the cancer journey they have shared,” royal expert Jennie Bond told The Mirror.

"It certainly gave you the feeling that royal life is pretty much back on track after the scary past 18 months," the expert added.

Kate’s position during the iconic Buckingham Palace balcony appearance later also represented a return to royal protocol.

Prince William took up position next to his father, the King, during the appearance where Kate had been seen the year before.

"I think the fact that William stood next to his father on the balcony was a signal that things are returning to normal," Bond explained.

She added: "Last year was an exception, with the Princess of Wales taking on her first public duty since her cancer diagnosis, and I think the King was showing his special support for her by asking her to stand alongside him."

On Monday, Kate also joined her husband at the Garter Day Service at St George's Chapel at Windsor Castle.

Even after the major successive appearances, Kate had been due to travel in the second carriage with William during the Royal Procession at Ascot.

However, the arrangements were swiftly revised to reflect her absence from the day's races.

The sudden change caught racegoers by surprise, particularly as William had been scheduled to present race prizes on the second day of the prestigious meet.

The royal's mother Carole Middleton was photographed arriving at the racecourse just moments before the Palace announced her daughter's withdrawal.

She was accompanied by Alizee Thevenet, who is married to Kate's brother James Middleton.
