Biden’s allies have so far dismissed Kennedy’s primary campaign

Robert F Kennedy Jr has been tipped to drop his Democratic party bid to become president and instead run as an independent or third-party candidate.

The anti-vaccine activist’s campaign has teased at the announcement, following his recent speech in Michigan which could throw a wrench into the 2024 race.

Recent polls suggest the election will be a rematch between current President Joe Biden and former president Donald Trump.

In his speech, the 69-year-old slammed both the Donkeys and Elephants saying there was corruption “in the leadership of both political parties” adding that he wanted to “rewrite the assumptions and change the habits of American politics.”

During his rally, a man in the crowd asked: “Are you planning on running as a Democrat? Please say no.”

Kennedy replied: “You want the answer to that question, you can come to Philadelphia on Monday.”

JFK’s nephew has so far been running as a long-shot Democratic bid invoking the names of his late uncle and father but is lacking support in the polls.

Ratings actually show Kennedy is more popular among Republicans than his own party.

LATEST DEVEOPMENTS:

Far-right influencers close to the presidential contender sent strong signals on social media, with one anti-vaccine doctor, Joseph Mercola, running a poll on whether Kennedy should quit the Democratic party.

In the poll, an overwhelming majority or 82.6 per cent of Dr Mercola’s 1,195 voters supported RFK Jr dumping the Dems and running as an independent.

Kennedy’s move away from the Democratic party could be a danger to both Biden and Trump.

According to internal polling by Trump’s campaign, Kennedy’s independent bid could draw votes away from the current and former president when voters go to the polls at the next general election.

A source familiar with the poll told Semafor that RFK Jr could take enough votes “to make a difference”.

Hundreds of supporters gathered at Philadelphia’s Independence Mall for his speech with many fans claiming they don’t identify as Democratic or Republican and view Kennedy as a truth teller and a breath of fresh air.

“He tells it how it is,” Julia Hill, a 23-year-old student from New Jersey told AP. “He doesn’t sound like a politician.”
