An anti-MAGA Republican who voted for Joe Biden in 2020 has identified Kamala Harris' soft spot ahead of her clash with Donald Trump.
The Vice President, who was anointed as the Democratic Party’s nominee after Biden dropped out of the race, received a boost in the polls to hand her a three-point lead over Trump.
However, it is widely expected the race will narrow ahead of November 5 as American voters put Harris' policies under even greater scrutiny.
Former Republican Congressman Charlie Dent, who is leading the Our Republican Legacy to steer the Grand Old Party away from MAGA Trumpism, told GB News: “Trump’s been calling her a socialist and I think Harris didn't do herself any favours when she released her economic plan.
“That was talking about price gouging, frankly, price controls. I mean, if you don't want to be called a socialist, don't talk about price controls. Goodness gracious, it'll create shortages and hoarding.
“It won't help inflation. We've been through this before. Nixon tried [and] it was a disaster. Of course, the old Soviet Union, where the price of bread was really cheap, the problem was you couldn't get any.”
However, Dent was also critical of Trump’s tariffs and warned “pocketbook” driven swing voters will not want to pay more for goods in shops.
The overall economic picture makes for interesting reading ahead of November 5.
“We’re not in a recession but there are signs that it’s softening,” Dent said. “House prices and food prices are really driving a lot of anger.”
The 64-year-old identified key areas where Republicans and Democrats have advantages over each other.
The Grand Old Party holds stronger positions on the southern border and economy.
However, democracy and women’s reproductive rights remain salient for the Democrats.
LATEST DEVELOPMENTS:Tim Walz
GettyDent even claimed Harris, who was California’s Attorney General, has done a better job at “prosecuting” Trump than Biden was able to.
“Harris parachuting has been enormously beneficial to the Democrats,” he said.
However, Dent aired concern about Harris' Vice President pick Tim Walz.
He said: “Is she going to play better? Is she going to play better in Wisconsin, Pennsylvania and Michigan than Biden? Scranton Joe? I'm not so sure Kamala will play better.
“She brought in Tim Walz. She thinks that would help. I thought, now I know Tim, I served with him.
“He's a good man, honourable man, but I didn't think he brought as much value to the ticket as maybe Josh Shapiro.”
Shapiro’s home state Pennsylvania is crucial to either candidate winning the race to the White House on November 5.
Walz is instead running from the state of Minnesota which has voted Democrat in every election since 1972.
Harris' Rust Belt strategy is also coming under ever greater scrutiny after the Vice President was accused of “flip-flopping” on fracking in Pennsylvania.
Despite holding reservations about Harris, Dent stressed he would not vote for Trump on November 5.
He said: “I'm not voting for Donald Trump but I'm going to give this thing a little bit more time. I think she [Harris] is certainly a better [and], in many ways, a better candidate than Biden. But the other issue she has is ideological.
“She is perceived well to the left of centre and she's got to figure out a way to reposition herself to bring herself more in line with where most Americans are ideologically.”
