Biden stepped away after struggling to convince the American electorate about his cognitive health

Joe Biden reveals exactly why he dropped out of 2024 election after botched

Joe Biden has explained why he dropped out of the 2024 US Presidential race in his first sit-down interview since exiting the White House.

The former president bowed out of the race after months at the front and centre of it as the man gunning for re-election.

After a weak debate showing against his Republican foe Donald Trump in July, Biden withdrew his candidacy, but confirmed he would continue serving as president until the conclusion of his term.

He threw his weight behind Vice President Kamala Harris, who would fall to a crushing defeat at the election in November.

Speaking to the BBC, Biden insisted stepping away sooner would not have made a difference.

“I don’t think it would have mattered”, he said.

“Things moved so quickly. It made it difficult to walk away. It was a hard decision.”

Asked if he has any regrets, he said: “No, I think it was the right decision. It was just a difficult decision.”

Concerns about Biden’s ability to govern dominated his final months in office.

Biden was 82-years-old when he left office, making him the oldest ever president.

Speeches and interviews were overshadowed by gaffes and ramblings which led many to question whether Biden’s cognitive powers were strong enough to hold high office.

The president always denied such suggestions and insisted he had been cleared as fit to govern by medical experts.

It became clear Biden was fighting a losing battle in his bid to allay concerns held by the electorate and he handed Harris the reins.

Her short-lived campaign proved disastrous, with Trump eventually romping to victory to win a second term.
