David Axelrod highlighted Biden's advancing age
Joe Biden called Barack Obama’s long-time adviser a “p***k” after he suggested the President should reconsider his re-election bid because of his age.
David Axelrod, a Democrat political strategist, sparked the feud by emphasising Biden’s advancing age and deteriorating positions in the polls.
Writing on social media, Axelrod said: “Only Joe Biden can make this decision. If he continues to run, he will be the nominee of the Democratic Party. What he needs to decide is whether that is wise; whether it’s in HIS best interest or the country’s?”
He continued: “The greatest concern is that his biggest liability is the one thing he can't change. Among all the unpredictables there is one thing that is sure: the age arrow only points in one direction.”
In response, Biden, 80, called Axelrod a “pr***”, according to Politico.
Axelrod also cited Biden’s dwindling poll position, sharing polls showing him trailing behind Donald Trump in five out of six key swing states.
The results have triggered discussions over whether Biden is the right democratic candidate to challenge Trump at the next election.
The new super-poll of 15,000 Americans found that Biden would win the popular vote by 49 per cent but would lose to Trump after failing to hold the swing states.
Biden’s granddaughter, Naomi, slammed the political strategist for his comments, calling him a “jerk with a microphone”.
She posted on social media: “Looking forward to proving the political pundits wrong… again.”
LATEST DEVELOPMENTS:
However, Axelrod did not back down from his comments, reiterating that Biden’s main hindrance was his age.
“I think that there is one issue that is hanging over him,” Axelrod said to CNN.
“I think with Donald Trump on the other end, he could still win this election. But the age issue is difficult."
Biden’s campaign team have played down the poll results and emphasised that the president loves to work late at night on policymaking sessions.
Yet a US political expert has claimed that Biden may be asked to leave by his own party, with some seeing him as “peculiarly weak”.
According to a Suffolk University poll of 1,000 Americans, voters are more likely to trust Trump than Biden in matters of the economy, immigration and foreign policy by 11, nine and six percentage points respectively.
Speaking to GB News, American political journalist John Fund warned the blue party could try to nudge Biden out of the race.
“The polls show Biden doing particularly poorly this week, losing five out of six of the swing states to Trump,” Fund said.
“Of course, polls can change and of course Donald Trump, as you've probably heard, has some legal problems.
“Things can change but Democrats see Joe Biden as peculiarly weak, and he shows increasing signs of weakness and halting delivery of remarks when he makes appearances in public.”
The President has become infamous for his frequent gaffes, most notably incorrectly referring to the “nine wonders of the world”.
Most recently, Biden repeated a seemingly fabricated story during a speech in Delaware.
The 80-year-old tried to re-share a personal story – one that he has told to audiences at least 11 times.
Yet each time, the story has differed, and analysts have debunked its credibility.
